The Urdu-speaking community in Bangladesh has a rich history and a unique cultural identity that sets them apart from other groups in the country. Also known as the Bihari community, they trace their roots back to the partition of British India in 1947, when many Urdu-speaking Muslims migrated to the region that would later become East Pakistan, and eventually Bangladesh.

Despite their long history in the country, the Urdu-speaking community has faced numerous challenges over the years. One of the most significant issues they have had to contend with is their status as stateless individuals, as they were not granted citizenship rights by the Bangladeshi government. This lack of recognition has made it difficult for them to access basic services such as education, healthcare, and employment, further marginalizing them within Bangladeshi society. Another major challenge the Urdu-speaking community faces is the issue of integration. Many members of the community live in crowded, dilapidated settlements such as Geneva Camp in Dhaka, which lack basic amenities and infrastructure. This has perpetuated a cycle of poverty and deprivation, making it difficult for community members to break out of the cycle of marginalization and improve their living conditions. In recent years, there have been efforts to address the challenges faced by the Urdu-speaking community in Bangladesh. Non-governmental organizations and activists have been working to raise awareness about their plight and advocate for their rights, including the right to citizenship. The Bangladeshi government has also taken some steps to provide basic services to the community and improve their living conditions. Despite these efforts, much more needs to be done to fully integrate the Urdu-speaking community into Bangladeshi society and ensure that they have access to the rights and opportunities enjoyed by all citizens. By addressing their marginalized status and providing them with the support they need to thrive, Bangladesh can harness the valuable contributions that the Urdu-speaking community has to offer and create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
